2003 Pooley Family Reserve Pinot Noir

2003 Pooley Family Reserve Pinot Noir is our flagship wine. The fruit for this wine is selectively harvested from the original vines, planted more than 20 years ago, and which are now in full balance and showing their depth of character. 2003 Pooley Family Reserve Pinot Noir is a real sleeper. It is continuing to evolve. It is fragrant, intense and concentrated in flavour, with deep, rich cherries and plums and earthy spices, cloaked in velvet tannins.
2003 Pooley Family Reserve Pinot Noir was voted in the top 50 Pinot Noirs at the 2003 Tasmanian Wine Show. A small quantity was made, and will continue to be made, from only the best of vintages, so don't expect to see it every year.
The fruit used for this wine is solely from the oldest vines from the old Cooinda Vale Vineyard block. This label is to reflect the true character of the variety.
These wines may not be produced every year, will always be in limited volumes, priced accordingly, and only available from the cellar door or by mail order.
Winemaking Notes
This wine was fermented dry in small fermenting tanks, hand-plunged daily, left on skins for about a week, pressed out and then matured in 10% new and 90% old French oak barriques for 18 months before bottling.

Wine Characteristics
| Colour | Bright, dark cherry, brickish edges. |
|---|---|
| Nose | Dark berry fruit nose, with hints of violets and chocolate. Liquorice and tobacco leaf. Lean perfumed nose, hints of floral blossom. |
| The Grape | Solely selected from the oldest vines in our vineyard which Denis Pooley planted more than 20 years ago. These vines are now reaching maturity and are adding their own characteristics to the wine. This wine is limited (only 300 bottles are usually produced) and it is only available through the cellar door or by mail order. The grapes are estate-grown from our cool climate vineyard in the Coal River Valley of southern Tasmania. Special care is taken to develop and maximize the potential of the fruit for its quality requirements. Emphasis is placed on quality rather than quantity. A balanced vine produces finer quality fruit. The fruit is harvested by hand in mid-April when the fruit flavours and acids are balanced. |
| Alc/vol | 13.2% |
| Cellaring | The firmer, fleshier and more persistent tannins gives this style of Pinot greater ageing potential. Still young and in need of more time in the bottle. We recommend cellaring from five to ten years plus. |
| Serve With | Pork, red meats and game. |
| Price | $60.00 per bottle |
